About

The UNC Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill conceptualized and organized the inaugural North Carolina Literary Festival in 1998.  Because of its success, a favorable community response, and to ensure its sustainability, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and Duke University decided to share the responsibility of hosting the Festival.  The biennial festival is cooperatively organized and sponsored by the three universities and the location rotates among the campuses.  North Carolina Central University also participates as a sponsor at each festival.  The Friends of the UNC Chapel Hill Academic Affairs Library hosted the inaugural Festival in 2002, NC State hosted the 2004 Festival and the 2006 Festival was hosted by Duke.  UNC at Chapel Hill is host to the 2009 North Carolina Literary Festival (NCLF).

The NCLF is an educational outreach project that promotes reading and writing and spotlights the literature of the American South, especially the wonderful works produced by North Carolina authors.  In addition to many distinguished keynotes, the festival features North Carolina favorites, emerging artists, well-known southern writers, and world-class authors from around the country.  Designed to attract people of all ages and interests, the festival activities are free and open to the public.  Varied in content, the event includes readings and discussions, exhibits, performances, book signings, lectures and book sales.  A key component is the children's stage and activity area, which caters solely to the interests of youth.  Highlighting a variety of writing styles and categories, the festival will be brimming with artistic and musical performances from multi-talented authors.
